Atlanta, Georgia
I have been able to take advantage of Doug's work travels lately. The first trip was to Atlanta, GA. We flew in the weekend before he had to be there for meetings and I flew back home on Monday while he stayed to work. I was looking forward to the warm weather down south, but it ended up to be almost as cold as it was in MN! Low 50s! We were able to see quite a few sites and enjoy the company of Doug's friends.
On Friday night, Yetta, a diving friend of Doug's took us out to Fado's. They had recently re-opened in a new and improved location and it was PACKED! The evening was nice enough for us to enjoy the evening out on the rooftop patio. (Okay so the weather was a little nicer than MN.)
On Saturday we took our time easing into the day and started off by walking around downtown Atlanta. We had lunch at a Brazilian steakhouse (YUM) and then made our way towards World of Coke. http://www.woccatlanta.com/ It was a really cool place and if you were a Coke enthusiast you would be in HEAVEN. They had all sorts of vintage pieces. Signs, pins, art, playing cards, lamps, the couch from American Idol 5?, and my favorite: the vintage vending machines. They had one that was "Dial A Coke", you can see it in the picture. We enjoyed a 4D, yes, 4D movie that had the normal 3D effects and then the moving chairs that shake you and poke you in the back, and there was even water that was splashed on you. (There is a similar ride at Disney.) We learned the history of Coke and lots of interesting facts such as the perfect temperature to chill a Coke. Do you know?? 38 degrees. At the very end they have more than 60 different flavors that Coke Cola makes for different places around the world. There are little cups that you can take from one station to another to try as many as you'd like. There were some that I would drink and quite a few that I would not. Reminded me of being in Germany when I was little and we tried to hunt down soda. The worst flavor was a lemon lime flavor that they sell in Italy and it was almost comical to watch people taste that one, if they even swallowed! By the time we left we felt as though we had just done 60 highly carbonated shots! My stomach was not very happy.
Next we wandered over to the CNN Center. On the way we checked out all the damage from the tornadoes that went through the week before. It was scary to see all the blown out windows on so many of the buildings, even the CNN Center. http://www.cnn.com/tour/atlanta/ If you check out the pictures on their page you'll see quite a few of the fun parts of the tour we went on. It was a very educational tour and I couldn't believe how much I learned about CNN and the CNN Center. An odd fact for you is that the floor tiles actually are a map of the globe and there are gold circles in locations that CNN has offices. When you are walking around on the floor you wouldn't know the difference! I thought it was completely random before we took the tour.
That evening we met Doug's previous co-worker Gary and his wife and some other friends for dinner at Seasons 52. Yetta was also able to join us. After dinner we made our way to the Fox Theater for the show Avenue Q. The show was probably one of Doug's favorites! The theater was amazing as well, a 1920s building that was originally a mosque.
Sunday was the rainy cold day. We were told that if we were in Atlanta that we needed to check out the Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial. We were there the week before the 40th anniversary of his death so there was quite a bit of press coverage at the time about the location. http://www.thekingcenter.org/tkc/index.asp It was great to see video's of Dr. King speaking and really see and learn what an amazing man he was. We were able to walk around the neighborhood he grew up in. Doug and I enjoyed our time there.
That afternoon we decided to head back to Seasons 52 to watch some of the college basketball and just hang out. We were there for a while and then decided to check out another restaurant we went to the evening before. We got there and it was open, but NO ONE was there. We turned around and went back to Seasons 52 where we stayed the rest of the day! We made good friends with the staff at least!
I flew out the next morning back to MN.
